Technical Tool Overview: Thermal Insulation Calculator

Thermal insulation in textiles relies on the ability of the material to resist heat flow ($R_{ct}$). Heat always moves from warm (the body) to cold (the environment). The fabric’s job is to create a barrier.

Functional Logic & Architecture

  • The Thickness Factor: Air is the best natural insulator. Fabrics that are “lofty” (like wool or down) trap more air per millimeter of thickness than dense fabrics like silk.
  • CLO vs. TOG:
    • CLO (1.0): The amount of insulation required to keep a person comfortable at $21^\circ\text{C}$ ($70^\circ\text{F}$).
    • TOG (1.0): Used primarily in the UK for duvets and blankets ($1 \text{ TOG} = 0.1 \text{ m}^2\text{K/W}$).
    • Conversion: $1 \text{ CLO} \approx 0.645 \text{ TOG}$.
  • The Air Gap Bonus: When you wear two layers, the thin layer of air trapped between them (the “inter-layer gap”) often provides more insulation than the fabric itself. This is why layering is mathematically more efficient than one thick garment.

Features & Capabilities

  • Sleek 4px UI: Designed for precision and speed in technical design environments.
  • Dual Metric Output: Provides results in both CLO and TOG to satisfy global manufacturing standards.
  • Comfort Prediction: Translates the scientific resistance value into a “Minimum Comfort Temperature,” making it relatable for consumers.

Industry Use Cases

  • Product Specification: Helping Rangeen Jora label their winter coats with a “Warmth Rating” (e.g., “Comfortable down to $5^\circ\text{C}$”).
  • Uniform Procurement: Assisting DIHOD Software House clients in selecting appropriate workwear for cold storage or outdoor winter environments.
  • Textile R&D: Comparing the thermal efficiency of recycled polyester fill versus natural wool.
