Understanding Your Cholesterol Numbers

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your blood. While your body needs it to build healthy cells, high levels of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) can increase your risk of heart disease. At DIHOD Software House, we’ve developed this tool to help Creshy Tools users in Karachi quickly interpret their lipid panel without waiting for a doctor’s call.

What Do These Markers Mean?

[Image of HDL vs LDL cholesterol in blood vessels]

HDL (The “Good” One)

  • Acts as a scavenger, carrying LDL away from the arteries.
  • Higher levels (above 60 mg/dL) are protective.
  • Boosted by exercise and healthy fats.

LDL (The “Bad” One)

  • Contributes to plaque buildup in arteries (Atherosclerosis).
  • Ideally should be below 100 mg/dL.
  • High levels increase stroke and heart attack risk.

The Friedewald Formula

This calculator uses the industry-standard formula to estimate LDL:

$LDL = Total\ Cholesterol – HDL – (Triglycerides / 5)$

Note: This formula is accurate only if Triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL.

Managing Health in Karachi

  • The Tech Professional: Long hours at Creshy Group mean we must watch our intake of oily foods (like Nihari or Biryani) which can spike Triglycerides.
  • Exercise: Even 20 minutes of walking at Clifton or DHA can significantly improve your HDL levels.
  • Regular Monitoring: Adults over 20 should have their cholesterol checked every 4-6 years.
Sufyan’s Pro Tip: For the most accurate result, you should be **fasting** (no food for 9-12 hours) before your blood test. If your Triglycerides are high, your LDL calculation might look lower than it actually is, so always double-check with a professional cardiologist!
