Straightens & Trims, Not Just Cleans Color

PDF Photocopy Cleaner

Fixes the specific artifacts photocopiers leave behind โ€” crooked pages and dark edge borders โ€” on top of background cleanup.

Photocopiers Leave Their Own Signature of Problems

A photocopy doesn’t just pick up a gray tint โ€” it tends to carry a specific set of artifacts that come from the machine itself. Feed a page in slightly crooked and the whole copy comes out at a faint angle, just enough to be distracting when reading on screen. Don’t close the lid all the way, or copy a page smaller than the glass bed, and you get a thick black border running along one or more edges, sometimes with the shadow of the lid’s hinge. Neither of these is a color or brightness problem, which is why a whitening tool alone can’t fix them. PDF Photocopy Cleaner adds two corrections built specifically for these photocopier artifacts, on top of standard background cleanup.

Auto-Deskew and Border Cleanup

Auto-straighten works by testing a small range of rotation angles against a downsampled version of the page and measuring which angle produces the sharpest, most aligned rows of text โ€” the same way text naturally lines up horizontally when a page is straight. Once the best angle is found, the full page is rotated to correct it. Border cleanup works differently: it samples a strip along each of the four edges and checks whether that strip is significantly darker than the rest of the page, which is the signature of a photocopier’s black border. Where it finds one, that strip is whitened along with the rest of the background.

Automatic Skew Detection

Analyzes text alignment to estimate how far a page is rotated, then straightens it without manual angle guessing.

Edge Border Detection

Checks each of the four page edges independently, so a border on just one side doesn’t trigger unnecessary changes elsewhere.

Combined With Background Whitening

Run geometric fixes and standard background cleanup together in a single pass instead of using separate tools.

Selective Stage Toggles

Turn off deskew or border removal independently if your copy only has one of the two problems.

Common Photocopier Artifacts This Targets

  • A page copied at a slight angle because it wasn’t fed in perfectly straight
  • A thick black band along one edge from a lid that didn’t fully close
  • Dark corners or margins from copying a page smaller than the glass bed
  • A faint shadow line near the spine when copying from a bound document

How to Use It

  1. Upload your PDF: Add the photocopied file with visible skew or dark borders.
  2. Choose your corrections: Keep deskew and border removal on, or toggle off what you don’t need.
  3. Set whitening strength: Adjust how aggressively the remaining background gets cleaned.
  4. Process and download: Get a straightened, border-free, cleaned copy.

Handled Locally, Start to Finish

Skew analysis, border detection, and whitening all run inside your browser as each page is processed. No file is ever uploaded to a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much rotation can auto-straighten correct? It’s tuned for the small, few-degree skew typical of a page fed slightly crooked, not major misalignment from a photo taken at an angle.

Will border removal ever cut off part of my content? It whitens detected dark strips rather than cropping the page, so the page dimensions stay the same and no content is physically removed.

What if only some pages in my document are crooked? Deskew is evaluated per page, so straight pages are left as they are while crooked ones get corrected.
