Understanding Insulin Calculation

Calculating the right amount of insulin is a science. A Bolus Dose consists of two parts: the amount needed to cover the carbohydrates you’re about to eat and the amount needed to bring your blood sugar down to a healthy target. At DIHOD Software House, we’ve built this for Creshy Tools to provide quick math for complex diabetes management.

Key Terms to Know

Insulin-to-Carb Ratio (ICR)

This tells you how many grams of carbohydrates are covered by one unit of rapid-acting insulin. For many, it starts at 1:15 (1 unit for 15g carbs).

Correction Factor (ISF)

This is how many points (mg/dL) your blood sugar drops from one unit of insulin. If your ISF is 50, one unit will drop your sugar by 50 mg/dL.

How the Math Works

The calculator uses these professional medical formulas:

  1. Meal Dose: $Total\ Carbs / ICR$
  2. Correction Dose: $(Current\ Sugar – Target\ Sugar) / ISF$
  3. Total Dose: $Meal\ Dose + Correction\ Dose$

Safety Checklist for Karachi Users

  • Verify Ratios: Never guess your ICR or ISF. These must be provided by your doctor in Karachi.
  • Insulin Stacking: Avoid taking correction doses too close together (usually wait 3-4 hours) to prevent “hypo” (low sugar).
  • Activity Level: If you are planning to be physically active at Creshy Group or Creshy Studio, you may need less insulin.
WARNING: This calculator is a mathematical tool only. It does not account for exercise, illness, or stress. If you feel dizzy, shaky, or confused, treat for low blood sugar immediately and contact emergency services.
