Elastic Estimator
Calculate tension and overlap for waistbands.
Technical Tool Overview: Elastic Length Estimator
The Elastic Length Estimator solves the “Waistband Sag” problem. In garment manufacturing, defining the length of the elastic is a multi-variable equation.
Functional Logic & Architecture
- The Negative Ease Factor: This is the most critical variable. If the elastic is 30″ and the waist is 30″, the garment will fall. The algorithm uses a “Tension Profile” multiplier:
- 0.85 (Light): Used for lightweight cotton loungewear where comfort is prioritized over high-retention.
- 0.80 (Standard): The baseline for most trousers and skirt waistbands.
- 0.75 (Firm): Used for high-intensity activewear where the garment must remain anchored during movement.
- Overlap Compensation: The tool adds the
overlapvariable back after the tension calculation. This ensures the elastic has enough material to create a secure, flat stitch (usually a zig-zag or box stitch) without losing the intended tension.
Features & Capabilities
- Tension-Aware Logic: Allows designers to select the garment’s purpose, automatically adjusting the tension math.
- Precise Seam Allowance: Unlike generic calculators, this accounts for the “joining length,” which is crucial for manufacturing efficiency at scale.
- Dual-Unit Output: Essential for the global manufacturing standards used by DIHOD Software House.
Industry Use Cases
- Ready-to-Wear (RTW) Production: Helping brands like Rangeen Jora standardize their waistband production across different size runs.
- Tech Pack Generation: Providing concrete hardware specs for factory sewing teams to prevent wasted material.
- E-Commerce Repair Hubs: Assisting home sewers and DIY enthusiasts in replacing worn-out elastic in their garments.
