Technical Tool Overview: Eco-Friendly Fabric Estimator
This tool handles the Source-to-Shelf math for sustainable textiles. Unlike conventional fabrics, eco-friendly fibers (especially bast fibers like Hemp or Linen) often have higher Prep Lossโthe fabric lost during cleaning, softening, and pre-shrinking.
Functional Logic & Architecture
- Prep Loss Multipliers: The algorithm uses specific coefficients based on fiber stability:
- Organic Cotton (1.12): Higher loss than conventional cotton because it hasn’t been chemically reinforced during growth.
- Hemp (1.18): Natural irregularities and coarse fibers lead to higher wastage during the “Degumming” and weaving process.
- Recycled Polyester (1.05): Very stable; behaves almost like virgin material but requires a small buffer for batch-to-color variations.
- Gross Requirement Logic: $\text{Gross} = (\text{Units} \times \text{Meters per Unit}) \times \text{Loss Factor}$. This ensures the procurement team buys enough fabric to cover both the garments and the inevitable process waste.
Features & Capabilities
- Sleek 4px Logic: Condensed input fields designed for procurement officers who need to run numbers during vendor meetings.
- Yield Loss Transparency: Clearly separates “Net Fabric” from “Process Loss,” helping in negotiation with eco-certified mills.
- Procurement Targeting: Categorizes the order as “Bulk” or “Standard,” allowing for better logistics planning.
Industry Use Cases
- Eco-Collection Launch: Essential for Rangeen Jora when launching a “Pure Hemp” or “Organic Lawn” line to ensure they don’t run out of fabric mid-production.
- Supply Chain Management: Used by DIHOD Software House to build sourcing modules that specifically track GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified materials.
- Costing & Budgeting: Sustainable fabrics are more expensive per meter; this tool ensures the budget accounts for the gross amount needed, not just the net.
