PDF Gray Background Remover
Strip out flat gray photocopy noise while keeping blue signatures, red stamps, and highlighter marks intact.
Not All Light Pixels Are Background Noise
A simple whitening tool works by lightening anything above a brightness cutoff, but that approach has a blind spot: a pale blue signature, a faded red stamp, or a yellow highlighter mark can sit at a similar brightness level to the gray photocopy noise around it. Whiten by brightness alone and you risk washing out the exact marks that matter most โ the signature that proves a document was signed, or the stamp that proves it was approved. PDF Gray Background Remover checks color saturation as well as brightness, so it can tell the difference between “this pixel is gray background” and “this pixel just happens to be light but is actually colored ink.”
How Color-Aware Cleaning Works
For every pixel above the whitening threshold, the tool also checks how far the red, green, and blue values differ from one another. A true gray pixel has nearly identical red, green, and blue values โ that’s what makes it gray. A colored pixel, even a light one, has a noticeable gap between at least one of those channels. When Preserve Colored Ink is switched on, pixels with a meaningful color gap are left alone even if they’re bright, while genuinely gray, flat pixels still get pushed to white.
Saturation Detection
Distinguishes true gray tones from light-but-colored ink by comparing red, green, and blue channel values pixel by pixel.
Adjustable Color Sensitivity
Control how strict the color check is โ tighter for maximum background removal, looser to protect more subtle colored tones.
Three Gray Thresholds
Choose how aggressively actual gray backgrounds get flattened, independent of the color-preservation setting.
Signature-Safe by Default
Color preservation is enabled out of the box, so signed and stamped documents stay intact unless you turn it off.
Where Color Preservation Matters
- Signed contracts and agreements where a blue or black ink signature needs to remain visible and distinct.
- Notarized or stamped paperwork carrying an official red or purple stamp that shouldn’t fade.
- Annotated study materials with yellow or pink highlighter marks worth keeping.
- Forms with colored section markers used to separate or flag specific parts of a document.
How to Use It
- Upload your document: Choose a scanned PDF that mixes gray background with colored marks.
- Set the gray threshold: Match it to how strong the photocopy tint actually is.
- Leave color preservation on: Turn it off only if you actually want every light color whitened too.
- Process and download: Get a document with a clean background and intact color marks.
Handled Entirely in Your Browser
Every pixel check, gray-versus-color comparison, and rewrite happens locally on your device. Signed or official documents never leave your browser tab during processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this remove a black-ink signature? Pure black text and signatures are dark enough to fall below the whitening threshold entirely, so they’re preserved regardless of the color setting.
What happens if I turn Preserve Colored Ink off? The tool behaves like a standard brightness-based whitener, which may lighten pale colored marks along with the gray background.
Can this fix a page with heavy color throughout, like a printed graphic? It’s built for mostly gray, text-based documents with small colored accents โ heavily colored pages may see limited background removal by design.
