Introduction
The Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a quick and effective way to see how much fat is stored on your waist, hips, and buttocks. Research shows that people with “Apple-shaped” bodies (more weight around the waist) face higher health risks than those with “Pear-shaped” bodies. At DIHOD Software House, we’ve developed this calculator to help users in Karachi and beyond monitor their metabolic health beyond just the numbers on a weighing scale.
How to Interpret WHR Results
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is:
Men’s Health Risk
- Low Risk: 0.90 or less
- Moderate Risk: 0.91 to 0.99
- High Risk: 1.00 or higher
Women’s Health Risk
- Low Risk: 0.80 or less
- Moderate Risk: 0.81 to 0.84
- High Risk: 0.85 or higher
How to Measure Correctly
- Waist: Measure at the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips: Measure at the widest part of your buttocks.
- Posture: Stand straight and breathe out normally. Do not “suck in” your stomach for the most accurate reading.
Real-World Examples
- The Sedentary Developer: A coder at Creshy Group checking if long sitting hours are contributing to “Central Obesity.”
- Fitness Tracking: An athlete at Creshy Studio using WHR to track fat loss progress during a cutting phase.
- Preventive Care: Families using the tool to identify early warning signs of metabolic syndrome.
Sufyan’s Pro Tip: If your WHR is in the “High Risk” zone, focus on High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and reducing refined sugars. Abdominal fat is metabolically active, meaning it responds well to clean eating and consistent movement!
